BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The UNLV women's golf team put together one of its best rounds of the season, firing a team score of 7-under 281, and the Rebels are alone in first place following the opening round of the UNLV Spring Invitational, which is being played at Boulder City Golf Club.
The Rebels have three players in the top 10, lead by junior Therese Koelbaek, who is in third place with a 4-under 68 that featured seven birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. Following that double bogey on hole No. 10, which dropped her to 1-under, Koelbaek closed strong, rolling in birdies on three of her final eight holes.
Just one stroke behind her is teammate Kristen Schelling, as she is tied for fourth with a 3-under 69, which came under calm but chilly conditions on the course. She also had a strong closing push, carding birdies on three of her final six holes of the afternoon. The final Rebel under par and in the top 10 is senior Natasha Krishna, who is tied for 10th after an opening-round 1-under 71.
"It was great to see the entire lineup put together a complete round as a team today," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "Therese played really well and Kristen is playing with some confidence, which is good to see."
UNLV junior Alejandra Guacaneme felt comfortable as well playing on her home course, posting a score of 1-over 73 which has her tied for 20th after one round, and Bethany Glassford also shot in the 70s, carding a 4-over 76 that has her tied for 49th. The Rebels also have three individuals playing in the tournament, as Mandi Incorvaia (77, +5) is tied for 54th, Victoria Oros (80, +8) is tied for 81st and Stephanie Whatley (81, +9) is tied for 87th.
The Rebels have a four-shot lead over second-place Idaho (285, -3) after 18 holes of play, while Ball State (289, +1) is third. Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho has the individual lead with a 7-under 65, which is two shots better than Valdis Jonsdottir of Texas State, while Koelbaek is in third place.
UNLV is part of an 18-team field that includes seven teams in the top-50 of Golfweek's latest rankings in No. 34 Tulsa, No. 38 Texas, No. 45 UNLV, No. 46 Texas Tech, No. 47 Idaho, No. 48 Campbell and No. 50 Wisconsin. The Rebels are the defending team champion of the tournament, earning the 2009 title with a team score of 884 (+20), the second time the Rebels won their own spring tournament.
The tournament continues Tuesday, with teams teeing off of holes No. 1 and 10 at 7:30 a.m. (PT) on the par-72, 6,246-yard course, and the format will remain the same on Wednesday.
