Complete Second Round Results and Round 3 Tee Times.
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - On a chilly day at Boulder Creek Golf Club, the UNLV women's golf team continued its hot play, posting a second-round score of 2-under 286 in running out to a 17-stroke lead after two rounds of play at the UNLV Spring Invitational.
The Rebels are the only team under par following two rounds of play, with a team score of 9-under 567, and there are three UNLV players in the top five, including Therese Koelbaek in second and Kristen Schelling in third. That duo, along with Natasha Krishna who is tied for fifth, is a big reason the Rebels are in position to repeat as tournament champions heading into tomorrow's final round.
"Obviously I am very happy with how we stand right now," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "It has been a real team effort and the way we have played the last couple of days is what I knew this team is capable of. Now we need to come out ready to finish tomorrow."
Temperatures were in the high 40s and low 50s throughout most of the round, but that did not affect the Rebels much, with Koelbaek and Schelling each posting rounds of 1-under 71, while Krishna carded an even-par 72. Koelbaek has a two-round total of 5-under 139 and is just one shot behind Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho, who has the individual lead with a 6-under 138.
Schelling sits two shots back of the leader with a 4-under 140, while Krishna is within striking distance of all three with a 36-hole total of 1-under 143.
Just outside of the top 10 is junior Alejandra Guacaneme, who shot even par on the day and is currently in 12th place with a score of 1-over 145, while Bethany Glassford rounds out the UNLV scorecard with a 7-over 151, which has her tied for 39th. UNLV also has a trio of individuals playing in the tournament, as Mandi Incorvaia (77-75--152, +8) is tied for 45th, Stephanie Whatley (81-76--157, +13) is tied for 70th and Victoria Oros (80-79--159, +15) is tied for 80th.
The Rebels hold their commanding lead over Baylor, which has a team score of 584 (+8) and Idaho is in third place with a score of 585 (+9).
UNLV is part of an 18-team field that includes seven teams in the top-50 of Golfweek's latest rankings in No. 34 Tulsa, No. 38 Texas, No. 45 UNLV, No. 46 Texas Tech, No. 47 Idaho, No. 48 Campbell and No. 50 Wisconsin. The Rebels are the defending team champion of the tournament, earning the 2009 title with a team score of 884 (+20), the second time the Rebels won their own spring tournament.
The tournament concludes Wednesday, with teams teeing off of holes No. 1 and 10 at 7:30 a.m. (PT) on the par-72, 6,246-yard course.
