LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior second baseman Ashli Holland has been named the Mountain West Conference's Softball Player of the Week for the second time in her career. Holland, a two-time all-conference performer, has now earned the league's weekly honor for the first time on April 28, 2009.
Holland, an Arvada, Colo., product, batted .556 (5-for-9) with two home runs, one double, eight RBI and five runs scored, as the Rebels went 3-0 to open Conference play last week. She also tallied 1.333 slugging and .636 on-base percentages over the three games. Against Colorado State, she hit a grand slam as part of a five-run Rebel sixth inning, giving them a 7-4 victory. In game one of a two game series vs. New Mexico, she went 1-for-4, while scoring a run in UNLV's 8-3 win. She ended the week going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, one double, four RBI and three runs scored in the Rebels' 12-11 come-from-behind game two win over the Lobos.
She joins Paige Emerson (March 16) and Marissa Nichols (April 6) as Rebels honored by the MWC this season with the weekly award. The trio of players are the most that UNLV has had recognized in a single season since four earned the distinction in 2007.
Holland and her teammates are back in action at home this weekend with a single contest against San Diego State on Saturday, April 17 at 1:00 pm. Saturday is being billed as both "Friends of Jaclyn and Strike Out Cancer Day". Jenna Jackson, who UNLV ceremonial adopted through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation on Nov. 14, will throw out the first pitch of the game.
