Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - In a battle of unbeaten Mountain West Conference squads, the UNLV Rebels (26-15 overall, 3-1 MWC) fell to the San Diego State Aztecs (26-10, 4-0 MWC) by a margin of 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. SDSU scored one run early in the first inning and held serve until scoring three runs late in the contest. UNLV, who had its six-game winning streak snapped with the loss, stranded seven runners in the game with four in scoring position.
The Aztecs took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with help from three hits. Felicia Reifschneider led off the frame with a duck-snort single to shallow left before working her way around the bases with a steal and a wild pitch. Justeen Maeva then brought her in with an RBI-single to right.
After four scoreless innings of action, SDSU added three insurance tallies in its final two at-bats. Maeva and Ashley Rose were responsible for two runs in the sixth off a solo home run and an RBI-single, respectively. Jessica Camello knocked in the game's final run with an RBI-single to left in the seventh.
The Rebels began the game getting runners to second base in the first two innings, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. After a quick 1-2-3 third inning, UNLV missed chances again in the fourth and fifth stanzas when runners were stranded 60-feet from home plate when the final out of each inning was made.
Samantha Beasley (21-6), who has been named the conference's pitcher of the week six times this season, earned the victory in complete-game fashion. Beasley was touched for five hits, while walking two, but did not allow a run in the shutout. She struck out 11 in the contest.
Traci Odegard (5-6) was saddled with the loss in six innings of work. Odegard allowed four runs on nine hits. She struck out five and walked two.
Jessica O'Connor relieved Odegard and gave up two hits and struck out one.
UNLV is back in action Tuesday, April 20 (4:00 pm), when they play its final non-conference game of the regular season when the UMKC Kangaroos come to town.
