Rebels Cage The Bengals

Final Stats

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The UNLV Rebels (22-14) knocked off the Idaho State Bengals Saturday for the second time in as many days, but without the dramatics that ensued in yesterday's extra-inning contest. UNLV steam rolled to a 19-4, five-inning victory over Idaho State, while amassing 13 hits and 12 walks. Alyssia De La Torre led the Rebel onslaught with a 3-for-3 performance, while tying the program record with four runs in the game.

The Rebels fell behind early when the Bengals strung together three singles for a one-run lead. Erin Olander stepped up with runners on the corners and hit the third single of the inning up the middle for the run.

UNLV answered back with four runs off of two hits in the second to lay claim to the game. De La Torre got the Rebel offensive going with a single and moved to second on a walk issued to Laura Briones. The Rebels then went the small ball route with back-to-back sacrifice bunts. Erica Addison laid down the first one to move the runners into scoring position, while Paige Emerson dropped down the other for a suicide-squeeze that scored De La Torre. With Briones and Emerson on the bases, Marissa Nichols was plunked by a Courtney Darby (0-1) offering to load the bases. Tara Bendt then delivered a single to the left side that scored Emerson and kept the bases juiced. Jaci Hull then stepped up and was promptly walked to easily bring in the third run of the inning. Nichols closed out the four-run stanza scoring on a wild pitch by Darby.

The Rebels added three more to the scoreboard in the third off of three hits. De La Torre led off the inning with a walk and quickly stole second before Emerson nailed a run-scoring single to center. Nichols then cranked a double to left to put herself and Emerson in scoring position. Darby then threw another wild pitch that brought home Emerson and pushed Nichols to third. Bendt then hit a triple to left that scored Nichols and gave UNLV a six-run cushion at 7-1.

ISU managed to get one run back in the third. Desirae Hoffman made her way around the bases after initially reaching on a walk. Three batters later, Hoffman stood on third and then scored on a sacrifice by Megan Miller.

UNLV then broke open the game in a big way with 12 runs on six hits in the fourth after ISU brought in Nora Maschue to pitch. Unfortunately, Maschue walked the first four batters she faced to score one run and then a pinch-hitting Chey Farley cranked a grand slam down the left-field line to clear the bases. The Bengals then brought Darby back in to pitch, but she did not have any better luck. After loading the bases for the second time in the inning, Tayler Aleman stepped up and hit a two-run double to left. De La Torre followed with an RBI-single down the line in left. Samantha Henry stepped into the batter's box as a pinch-hitter and knocked in a run with a single to short. Darby then walked Addison to bring in another run and force ISU to enter its third different pitcher of the inning with Kandis Clesson taking the circle. Korin Cuico then ended the scoring when Clesson walked her to bring in another tally.

The Bengal offense scored twice in the bottom of the fourth off of three hits and one error.

Wagner picked up the win in complete-game fashion. She allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits. She struck out four and walked three.

Darby was stuck with the loss in 3.1 combined innings pitched. She surrendered 13 runs on 10 hits, while walking six and striking out one.

The two ISU relievers tossed 1.2 innings and gave up six runs on three hits. They walked six and struck out one.
