Wagner, Fearn Lead Rebels To Win

ALBUQUERQUE - The UNLV Rebels (31-20 overall, 8-5 MWC) defeated the New Mexico Lobos (11-35, 1-12 MWC) by a 3-1 margin Thursday afternoon from Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M. UNLV fell behind 1-0 after UNM scored once in the third, but took hold of the game off a two-run home run by Kendall Fearn in the fifth. Kylie Wagner (12-6) went the distance and allowed only four hits in the contest.

The Lobos struck first when they scored a run off of one hit in the third. Shaunte Duarte began the inning with a one-out walk before moving to second on a groundout. Duarte wound up scoring on the Lobos' first hit of the game a RBI-single to left by Cristin Anderson.

The Rebels answered back two innings later when Fearn hit a shot to deep left that landed four rows up in the left-field bleachers. She stepped up with two outs and Paige Emerson on first after she reached after cueing a ball down the line in left for a single,

The Rebels added an insurance run in the seventh off of a sacrifice fly to right by Marissa Nichols. Ashli Holland scored on the play after leading off with a double to left-center and taking third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Emerson.

Holland and Emerson led the Rebels offensively with three hits and one run apiece.

UNM, who only had one scoring opportunity in the first six innings, had runners on the corners in the seventh, but failed to score. The Lobos got back-to-back singles with one out, but watched as Wagner got them to hit consecutive balls to the right-side of the infield for outs.

Wagner went the distance for the seventh time this season and only surrendered one run off of four hits. She struck out five and walked one.

Kaela DeBroeck (5-20) was saddled with the loss in 6.0 innings of work. DeBroeck was touched for three runs on 10 hits, while striking out two.

Kari Gutierrez relieved DeBroeck in the seventh and recorded all three outs.

UNLV is back in action Friday, May 14 at 4:00 pm MT (3:00 pm PT), when they face the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins.
