TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 12 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 6-over-par 290 on Thursday and is in fourth place at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club (par 71, 7,144 yards).
The Rebels trail tournament-leader Colorado State by seven shots after the Rams opened the tournament with a 1-under 283. San Diego State is second at 1-over, followed by BYU in third at 3-over. Defending champion TCU is fifth at 9-over, followed by Wyoming at 19-over, Air Force at 20-over, Utah at 21-over and New Mexico at 27-over.
Individually, there is a four-way tie for first place, which includes UNLV's Derek Ernst. Ernst, along with Colorado State's Zahkai Brown and Ryan Peterson, and BYU's Esteban Calisto, shot 1-under 70 and lead the field by a shot. After a birdie at the sixth hole, then a bogey at No. 7, Ernst rattled off three straight birdies from holes 8-10. He then parred each of the next seven holes until a double bogey on No. 18.
There is a seven-way tie for second place at even-par 71 that includes Rebel Colby Smith. Smith recorded two birdies on the day (holes five and eight) and a double bogey (on No. 13).
Other Rebel scores: Kevin Penner is tied for 18th at 2-over 73, while Eddie Olson and Brett Kanda are both tied for 27th at 5-over 76.
