NCAA West Regional Result
STANFORD, Calif. - The UNLV women's golf is tied for ninth following Friday's second round at the 2010 NCAA West Regional, which is being played at the Stanford Golf Course, where the top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships.
The Rebels posted a second-round score of 22-over 306 for a two-round total of 601 (+33), and the they are in a group of three teams that are two shots behind Iowa State for the final automatic berth. No. 3 Arizona has the team lead with a 585 (+17), good for a three stroke lead over No. 1 UCLA, which has a two-round total of 588 (+20).
Although it was not the type of second round she was expecting, UNLV head coach Missy Ringler likes her team's chances heading into the third round, especially if the Rebels can replicate Thursday's first-round performance.
"We left a few shots out there today but we still have a chance with a good round tomorrow," Ringler said. "We know we have to get a fourth score for us to contend for a spot in the top eight."
UNLV junior Alejandra Guacaneme is the top player on the leader board for her team, as she is tied for seventh with a 36-hole total of 3-over 145. Guacaneme carded a 3-over 74 today, a day after she opened up with an even-par 71. Rebel sophomore Kristen Schelling is the next, in a group that is tied for 17th with a score of 6-over 148, recording rounds of 71 (E) on Thursday and 77 (+6) on Friday.
Therese Koelbaek bounced back following a tough close to her first round, shooting a 2-over 73 on Friday, the best round by a Rebel in the second round, and she is tied for 28th with a total of 150 (+8). Natasha Krishna (76-86--162, +20) is tied for 105th and Mandi Incorvaia (84-82--166, +24) is tied for 115th.
Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State remains the individual leader with a 1-under 141, one shot better than Megan McChrystal of LSU, who has an even-par 142.
UNLV is one of a MWC-record five teams that earned a spot in one of the three regional tournaments, and the Rebels are joined in Stanford by fellow league member Colorado State. Top-ranked UCLA highlights the field, while No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Arizona, No. 6 Alabama, No. 11 Virginia, No. 17 Stanford and No. 23 Ohio State are also teams that are in Golfweek's latest rankings.
The top eight teams and top two individuals not on qualifying teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall and will be hosted by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
