LAS VEGAS - UNLV men's golf sophomore Derek Ernst has earned Third Team All-America honors as the 2010 PING Division I All-America Teams were announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday.
The first team had 11 members, while the second and third teams each had 10 members. There were a total of 30 golfers who were named honorable mention.
UNLV has now had a player earn All-America recognition in 21 of the last 22 years.
Ernst, who was also named to the PING All-West Region team earlier this month, was honored as this season's Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and was also selected to the All-MWC team.
The native of Clovis, Calif., won two individual titles this season - at the Tucker Invitational and at the Wimberly Intercollegiate. He led the Rebels in scoring average with 71.43 per round, which ranked second in the MWC. He also led UNLV in rounds played (37) and rounds under par (17). The MWC Golfer of the Month for September (co-winner), October/November and for February, Ernst recorded seven top-10 finishes this season, including five top-fives in 13 stroke-play tournaments.
Ernst finished the season ranked 21st in the nation according to the Golfstat Cup Standings and concluded the year with a tie for 25th-place individual finish at the NCAA Championship with a score of 1-under par.
Ernst recorded UNLV's low individual tournament of the season with a 10-under 206 at the Burns Intercollegiate, where he finished in second place. He tallied 11 rounds in the 60s and was also included on the Ben Hogan Award watch list in the fall.
