Complete Tournament Results
Three players from host UNLV won their singles matches Thursday and advanced through the second day at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Women's Mountain Regional Championships, which are being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Second-seeded Lucia Batta, ranked 95th in the nation, eased by Utah's Sammie Watson 6-1, 6-2; third-seeded Aleskandra Josifoska, ranked 117th, downed Steffi Rath 6-2, 6-1; and Nives Pavlovic got by Kristina Voytsekhovich of Utah State 6-1, 6-1. All three will play in the Round of 16 on Friday, which will be followed by quarterfinal action. The semifinals are Saturday and the championship is scheduled for Sunday.
In doubles, two UNLV duos got through Thursday's two rounds. Second-seeded Batta and Josifoska enjoyed a bye and then downed Hannah Tone and Ghizelle Doballah of NAU 8-3. Rumyana Terzieva and Anett Ferenczi-Bako defeated Carly Lloyd and Mandee Miller of Weber State 8-5 before advancing when their second-round opponents defaulted. Pavlovic and Manon de Lanla won their first match before falling in the second round. Two rounds of doubles will also be staged Saturday with the final on Sunday.
More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players are competing this week at UNLV as one of the 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
