The UNLV women's tennis team's Lucia Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska will go head-to-head in Sunday's final match after they each won their respective semifinal contests in singles play on the fourth day of the USTA/ITA Division I Women's Mountain Regional Championships, which are being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Unfortunately, the duo, who have been playing as a doubles team, were not as successful as partners on the court.
Second-seeded Batta, ranked 95th in the nation, and Josifoska, ranked 117th, earned berths into the Sunday's final match with Saturday's wins. Batta defeated Madeleine Saari-Bystrom 6-3, 6-2, while Josifoska erased the Utah's Anastasia Putilina, top-seeded and 64th ranked, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Batta and Josifoska needed to win twice to move onto Sunday's finale, but came up short with a loss in their first match. The pair was defeated by Air Force's Melissa Cecil/Tahlia Smoke 8-6.
More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players are competing this week at UNLV as one of the 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
