LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 17 UNLV men's golf team raced out to an 11-shot lead after the first day of play Monday at the 14-team Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, which is being played at New Mexico State University Golf Course (par 71, 7,074 yards).
UNLV took a 10-shot lead after the first round by firing a 12-under 272, then followed that up with a 13-under 271 for a 36-hole total of 25-under 543. Wichita State is in second place at 14-under (283-271). Host New Mexico State is third at 9-under (282-277), followed by Kansas in fourth at 4-under (287-277), while Nevada, Reno rounds out the top five at even par (293-275).
UNLV sophomore Nicholas Maruri shot back-to-back rounds of 5-under 66 to take a one-shot individual lead at 10-under 132. Wichita State's Hunter Sparks (68-65) and New Mexico State's Justin Shin (66-67) are both tied for second at 9-under.
Two other Rebel players are in the top 10 after two rounds as senior Derek Ernst is in fourth place at 8-under 134 (65-69) and junior Kevin Penner is tied for 10th at 2-under (70-70). Rebel sophomore Blake Biddle is tied for 17th at even par (76-66), while freshman Carl Jonson is tied for 27th at 2-over (71-73).
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. MT. If the Rebels can hold on to the lead it would mark their third team title in four events this fall.
