LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Powered by the stellar play of freshmen Dana Finkelstein and Mayko Chwen Wang, the UNLV women's golf team wrapped up round one action at the 10th annual Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in ninth place following a 2-over team score of 290.
Finkelstein carded a career-low of 70, including a run of four birdies over the final six holes to end the day at 2-under par in a tie for 11th place. Wang also ended the first round on a high note with birdies on two of the final three holes, finishing a stroke behind Finkelstein at 1-under par.
"We had a bit of a rough front side as a team, but recovered extremely well on the back nine to close out the day," said head coach Amy Bush. "Mayko and Dana showed the poise of veterans and helped us climb up the leader board with their aggressive play."
UC Davis leads the field 17 teams after shooting 11-under par. San Diego State is three strokes back in second followed by Pepperdine in third (-7), UC Irvine and Idaho in fourth (_2) and Oklahoma in sixth (-1).
Sophomore Katerina Prorokova is tied for 25th after turning in an even-par round of 72. After 11 consecutive pars, Prorokova moved to 1-under following a birdie at the par-4 third. A bogey two holes later dropped her to even par before a string of four more pars ended her round.
Charlotte Brooks battled back after a 5-over front, carding a birdie and bogey on the back nine to finish with a 77. Ellis Keenan rounded out the Rebel lineup with a 10-over round of 82.
Also competing as individuals for UNLV was Bethany Calvo and Marguerite Swearingen. Calvo carded two birdies on each side and finished the day at even par while Swearingen turned in a 4-over round of 76.
The Rebels will kick off action in the second round in the first slot of tee times, beginning at 7:30 a.m. with Keenan. UNLV will play alongside Louisville and Long Beach State in round two.
