LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team moved up four spots into a tie for fifth place after tying for the lowest team score of the day in second round action at the 10th Annual Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
The Rebels fired an even par round of 288, led by sophomore Katerina Prorokova's 3-under 69 and Charlotte Brooks' 1-under 71.
"I am extremely proud of our girls today, maintaining consistency throughout the entire round," said head coach Amy Bush. "We had some solid play today from a pair of sophomores following our first round when we had a couple of freshmen led the way. It has been a total team effort for us and we look forward to getting back at it tomorrow morning."
UC Davis (-9) holds a seven shot lead over second place UC Irvine (-2) and Pepperdine. San Diego State is in fourth at 1-under with UNLV tied with Idaho in fifth place at 2-over par.
Prorokova started the day with three straight pars before three consecutive birdies at the fourth, fifth and sixth holes. She ended her round with 12 straight pars, giving her 30 in 36 holes. Prorokova's 3-under round tied for the second lowest of the day and leaves her in a tie for eighth place.
Brooks got off to a hot start, making the turn at 4-under. A bogey at the par-3 12th was followed by her fifth birdie of the day at the par 5 13th. After three straight pars she went bogey-double bogey to finish the day. She moved up 27 spots on the leader board into a tie for 38th place heading into tomorrow's final round.
Freshman Dana Finkelstein continued her consistent play this week, carding an even par 72 on the day. She finished the front nine with back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth and made the turn at 1-over par. After six straight pars to open the back nine, Finkelstein fell to two-over with a bogey on the par-5 16th before closing out with birdies on the 17th and 18th to get back to even. She stands tied for 10th entering the final round.
Mayko Chwen Wang was 4-over on the day and is in a seven-way tie for 31st while Ellis Keenan bettered her first round score by three strokes, finishing with a 79 to round out the Rebel lineup.
Grace Na (Pepperdine) leads the field at 9-under par with Kayla Mortellaro (Idaho) in second just one stroke back. Liv Cheng (Pepperdine) is third at 6-under and Jessica Chulya (UC Davis) fourth at 5-under. Three players are tied for fifth just five shots back.
Tomorrow's final round will get under way with an 8 a.m. shot gun start.
