ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - A misplayed ball on a shot by New Mexico's Jennifer Williams led to the only goal of the game, sending the top-seeded Lobos to a 1-0 win over UNLV in the semifinals of the 2011 Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship on Friday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Rebels (8-10-3) saw their season ended, while UNM advances to Sunday's championship game against Wyoming.
New Mexico (11-4-4) controlled the ball for the majority of the game, and would take 11 shots to three for the Rebels. Shots on goal however were only three for the Lobos to one for UNLV. The game was scoreless until the 26th minute, when Williams dribbled past a Rebel defender and unleased a low shot towards UNLV goalie Kylie Wassell from 20 yards out, and it would slip in under her arms to the back corner of the goal for the score.
After seeing the Lobos hold an 8-2 edge on shots in the first half, UNLV limited UNM to just three in the second while taking one of its own, but could not get a ball past goalkeeper Kelli Cornell, who posted one save to earn the shutout. Wassell finished with two stops for the Rebels.
