PALM DESERT, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 9-over-par 297 and was in second place after the first round of play on Saturday at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, which is being hosted by the University of Wyoming and played at the Classic Club (par 72, 7,305 yards). Play was suspended during the second round early Saturday evening because of darkness.
The Rebels were just three shots off the lead after the first round, trailing Texas A&M, which led the field at 6-over 294. SMU and Santa Clara were tied for third at 11-over, followed by Colorado State in fifth at 12-over.
New Mexico's Tom Carlson was the first-round individual leader at 3-under 69, while UNLV sophomore Kevin Penner was just a shot back in second place at 2-under 70. Only one other golfer completed the first round with an under-par score - Glen Scher from UC Santa Barbara at 1-under 71. Rebel junior Derek Ernst and freshman Blake Biddle were also in the top 10 as both were in a tie for ninth place at 1-over 73.
Other Rebels: junior Colby Smith was tied for 85th at 9-over 81 and senior Jeremiah Wooding was tied for 90th at 11-over 83.
The 54-hole tournament was originally scheduled for 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. There are 20 teams and 104 individuals. The second round will be completed Sunday morning beginning at 7 a.m., with the third and final round to follow immediately afterward. No live internet scoring is available, but results will be posted on UNLVRebels.com.
