Koelbaek Three Shots Back After First Round

First Round Results l Second Round Tee TimesSANTA CLARITA, CA. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team opened up its spring portion of the 2010-11 season, entering the clubhouse in fifth place following the first round of the Bruin/Wave Invitational.

Senior and two-time All-American Therese Koelbaek shot even par 72 in the opening round. After finishing the front nine at even par, Koelbaek birdied the 10th 14th holes, moving to 2-under. A double-bogey seven on the par-5 18th dropped her to even for the round.

The Rebels as a team shot 15-over par (303) on the day and stand 22 strokes behind leader and co-host UCLA. Arizona sits in second at +4 while fellow Mountain West Conference rival San Diego State is in third at +7 and co-host Pepperdine in fourth at +8.

"We played well as a team today," first-year head coach Amy Bush said. "The players did a great job thinking about each shot and did a good job finishing the last six holes, which played very challenging today."

Freshman Katerina Prorokova is tied for 21st after a 3-over round of 75 today. Prorokova bogyed two of the first three holes but eagled the par-5 fourth to climb back to even par. Bogey's on the 13th, 15th and 16th dropped her to 3-over on the back nine.

"I am excited for Kat for scoring the eagle early in the round after back-to-back bogey's," said Bush. "Kat as well as the rest of the team are all in good spirits heading into the second round and are looking forward to getting underway tomorrow morning."

Senior Alejandra Guacaneme is tied for 36th after a 5-over par 77 while junior Bethany Glassford stands in a tie for 53rd after a 7-over effort of 79. Senior Mandi Incorvaia shot an 11-over 83 on the day to round out the Rebel lineup. Also competing for UNLV was Stephanie Whatley, shooting a 6-over 78 as an individual.

Second-round action at the Bruin/Wave Invitational picks up tomorrow morning.
