LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - It's a big week for UNLV Athletics. The Runnin' Rebel men's basketball team is headed to its fourth NCAA Tournament in the past five seasons and nationally ranked TCU comes to town to take on a red-hot UNLV baseball team this weekend. Meanwhile, UNLV's up-and-coming football program is taking a break - for spring break - in the middle of spring practice.
And to help spread the word on everything Rebel Athletics, RebelTV has been officially launched.
UNLV Athletics and Cox Communications have teamed up to bring fans RebelTV, a new channel offering exclusive, behind-the-scenes content on everything from men's basketball to special events. RebelTV, which plays on-demand at Cox Channel 636, is the premier place for fans to get up close and personal their favorite athletes from all 17 UNLV sports. The channel also features in-depth interviews with coaches and administrators as well as information on all upcoming special events at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center, Sam Boyd Stadium and Cox Pavilion.
"After listening to our fans talk about wanting to learn more about our teams, our events and our department, RebelTV was a no-brainer," said UNLV Athletics Director Jim Livengood. "It's a terrific new opportunity for us to provide Las Vegas residents and all supporters of UNLV Athletics & Entertainment with an inside look at our athletic programs and special events."
RebelTV features a magazine style monthly rotation of programming. The March 2011 edition is currently up and running and can be viewed by visiting Cox Channel 636. There fans will hear from Runnin' Rebel great Greg Anthony on his experience as a student-athlete at UNLV, get an in-depth look at UNLV football with head coach Bobby Hauck, and get analysis from Livengood concerning the current financial state of Nevada and UNLV. They can also view features on Disney On Ice as well as UNLV Athletics' impact in the community.
"One of our goals with RebelTV is to answer the questions fans might have about our programs," Livengood said. "We want to educate and entertain. We think fans will enjoy it and it will only get better in time."
Content for RebelTV is being produced by UNLV Athletics staff members as well as UNLV students. Livengood said this is an important element to RebelTV.
"In addition to this being for our fans, we want this to be a learning experience for UNLV students," Livengood said. "Many of these opportunities will also help our student-athletes grow socially. We're really excited about the big picture of RebelTV."
Helping to anchor and produce RebelTV is former Lady Rebel basketball player Brittany Halberg. Halberg, who played from 2005 to 2009, is joined in leading the RebelTV charge by fellow UNLV graduate student Marques Brody, who also serves as UNLV baseball's play-by-play broadcaster.
Coming soon to RebelTV is the April 2011 edition. Scheduled stories include UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck's race to find a new starting quarterback and a preview of the red-shirt basketball players set to join Lon Kruger's Runnin' Rebel team next season.
The monthly editions of RebelTV will also be available to be viewed at UNLVRebels.com.
