TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 17-over-par 305 and a second-round 8-over 288 on Monday at the National Invitational Tournament, which is being played at Omni Tucson National Golf Club. UNLV played its first round on the Catalina Course (par 72, 7,245 yards) and its second round on the Sonoran Course (par 70, 6,652 yards).
Five groups were still on the course when darkness suspended play in the second round: Kent State, Wyoming, Arizona (ind.), Indiana and individuals from New Mexico, Tulsa, Arizona and Kent State.
There is a three-way tie for first place, with all three having finished 36 holes. SMU, Tulsa and host Arizona are all at 16-over 584 and hold a nine-shot lead on UNLV, Kent State and Indiana, who are all tied for fourth place at 25-over. The Rebels finished both rounds with a 36-hole total of 593, while Kent State has three holes remaining in the second round and Indiana has one to go.
The tournament features 15 teams and 95 individuals.
Arizona's Jonathan Khan leads all individuals at 5-under 137 (67-70), while UNLV sophomore Kevin Penner and Tulsa's Stephen Carney are both tied for second at even-par, five shots back. Both Penner and Carney turned in rounds of 72 and 70 on Monday. All three golfers were able to get both rounds in before dark.
UNLV freshman Blake Biddle is tied for 17th at 6-over 148 after a 77 and 71, junior Derek Ernst is tied for 33rd at 9-over 151 after a 79 and 72, senior Jeremiah Wooding is tied for 63rd at 13-over 155 after an 80 and 75, and junior Colby Smith is tied for 73rd at 15-over 157 after a 77 and 80.
Monday was originally scheduled for 36 holes. The remainder of the second round will be played starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, with the final 18 holes to be played starting at 8 a.m.
