TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a season-low 11-under-par 273 on Friday during the second round of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort (par 71, 7,144 yards).
The Rebels moved from sixth place after day one to second after recording the lowest round of the tournament and now trail team-leading San Diego State by just one shot entering Saturday's final round. The Aztecs are at 9-under 559 after a second-round 281, while the Rebels are at 8-under 560. TCU is third at 3-under, followed by BYU in fourth at even-par, and Colorado State rounds out the top five at 5-over. New Mexico is sixth at 7-over, Wyoming is seventh at 12-over, Air Force is eighth at 15-over and Utah is ninth at 20-over.
UNLV junior Derek Ernst fired a tournament-low 7-under 64 on Friday and is in a three-way tie for the individual lead at 7-under 135. He collected eight birdies and had just one bogey on the round as he tied the MWC Championship single-round record.
Others tied for the tournament's lead are San Diego State's Johan Carlsson (67-68) and Wyoming's Gabe Maier (65-70). Carlsson is the only golfer in the field to post two straight sub-70 rounds, while Maier was the leader after day one.
UNLV sophomore Kevin Penner shot 2-under 69 on Friday and is tied for sixth at 3-under 139, four shots back.
Other Rebel scores: freshman Nicholas Maruri is tied for 12th at even-par 142 after a second-round 69, freshman Blake Biddle is tied for 20th at 2-over 144 after a second-round 71 and sophomore Arthur Kim is tied for 44th at 21-over 163 after a second-round 84.
