LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UC Santa Barbara's Dyanne Anderson scored a goal in the 82nd minute to hand the UNLV women's soccer team its first loss of the season, a 1-0 setback on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic at Peter Johann Memorial Field. In the day's first game, UC Riverside and Idaho played to a double-overtime 1-1 tie.
UNLV (1-1) was outshot 15-2 on the afternoon, but stayed in the game thanks to the strong play of sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Wassell, who finished the afternoon with six saves. Both of the shots for the Rebels were on goal. The best chance came on a close attempt on the left side from Caitlin Allen following a corner kick that crossed over the box, but UCSB (1-0-1) goalkeeper Makenna Henry was there to make the save, one of two she would finish with. The Rebels' other shot came late in the game following the UCSB goal, a shot by Brittney Flores from long distance.
The winning score came with 81:03 on the clock, as Alissa Sanchez sent a pass across the box to Anderson on the left side. She quickly unleashed a shot from close range that hit the left post and rolled just enough over the goalline for a score before Wassell was able to stop the ball.
"It's disappointing to get a loss at home, the energy at the end was promising, I just wish we had that a little bit longer," said UNLV head coach Jen Klein. "Kylie [Wassell] has done great this weekend for us though, she stepped up and made some good saves."
The Rebels will now play their next four games away from Las Vegas, beginning with this coming weekend's trip to the state of Oregon. UNLV will take on Portland State on Friday, Aug. 26 at 1 pm, and follow that with a Sunday, Aug. 28 contest at Oregon in Eugene, also at 1 pm.
"We now have to go out and play some big time teams to make sure we are ready for conference play, and we have to hit the road to do that," said Klein. "I think the team will be ready, we have a good core group here and some good younger players, so the next two weeks will be a good challenge for them."
