LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team opens up their 11th season as a program with a host of new faces this week in Fort Collins, Colo. At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.
"We are thrilled for the season to be getting underway," said head coach Amy Bush. "We have a young team this year, but we expect to continue with the tradition we have established over the last decade."
Coming off their ninth consecutive NCAA Regional Championship appearance, the Rebels will start this season without the best player in program history in the lineup for the first time in four years, as 2011 Mountain West Golfer of the Year and All-American Therese Koelbaek is now making her way through the LPGA's Q-School following a brilliant career in Rebel Red.
Eager to fill the big shoes left behind are a trio of freshmen who will see their first collegiate action this weekend. Dana Finkelstein (Chandler, Ariz./Coronoa del Sol) led all Rebel golfers through three rounds of qualifying action and will take the number one slot in the lineup. Joining Finkelstein are classmates Mayko Chwen Wang (Taipei, Taiwan/Los Altos) and Marguerite Swearingen (Livermore, Calif./Granada).
Senior Bethany Calvo (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) and sophomore Katerina Prorokova (Roznov, Czach Republic/The Pendleton School) round out the Rebel lineup this week in the 14th Ptarmigan Classic.
Last year's tournament champion Colorado returns to the field of 19 to defend its title and will be joined by host Colorado State, 12th-ranked Cal, UC Davis, San Jose State, Fresno State, Baylor, UTEP, Idaho, Long Beach State, Northern Colorado, Wyoming, Illinois, Nevada, Reno, Texas Tech, Louisville, New Mexico State and Santa Clara.
The first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, followed by the final round on Tuesday at 8:30. The par-72 Ptarmigan Country Club will play 6,302 yards this week.
