Rebels in 13th After Day One

Sept. 12, 2011

Day 1 Team and Individual Results

FORT COLLINS, COLO. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team opened up action in their first tournament of the 2011-12 season at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, playing their way to 13th place out of 19 schools through 36 holes of action.

"This is a great tournament for us to start our season," said head coach Amy Bush. "Our very talented freshmen group played well today and helped the team from the get go. We also had great rounds from out veterans Bethany and Katerina, which is great to have as we move forward."

Senior Bethany Calvo (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) paced UNLV on the day, opening up with an even par round on the first 18 before carding a 6-over 78 to end the day in a tie for 33rd place, 13 strokes behind leader Demi Runas of UC Davis (-7).

Calvo was one-over after a bogey on the par-4 third, but quickly evened up two holes later with a birdie on the par-5 519-yard fifth. Bogies on the 12th and 13th holes was followed by a pair of birdies on 15 and 17 to close out the back nine. Calvo carded two birdies during the second 18 of the day, but a string of four bogies in five holes led way to a 6-over round to close the day.

Mayko Chwen Wang (Taipei, Taiwan/Los Altos)carded the low round among the big three freshmen, shooting a 2-over 74 on the first 18 of the day. After a even-par 36 on the front, Wang made double bogey to open the back nine but quickly recovered with birdies on the par-3 11th and par-5 14th. Wang's 6-over second round puts her in a tie for 45th heading into Tuesday's final round.

Sophomore Katerina Prorokova (Roznov, Czach Republic/The Pendleton School) will start Tuesday one stroke behind Wang in a tie for 53rd after rounds of 74 and 79 respectively. After a slow start on the front nine in which she finished two over, Prorokova strung together three birdies in a span of five holes on the back nine to close with the second-best score of the day for UNLV.

Freshmen Marguerite Swearingen (Livermore, Calif./Granada) (T57th, 78, 76) and Dana Finkelstein (Chandler, Ariz./Coronoa del Sol) (T73rd, 81, 77) round out the Rebel five. Swearingen totaled four birdies on the front nine through the first two rounds while Finkelstein shaved four strokes off her opening-round 81 thanks in part to two birdies on the front nine in round two.

UC Davis leads the field at 1-under par with defending champion Colorado close behind at even par. Illinois (+3) sits in third with Baylor (+12) and No. 12 Cal (+13) in fifth.

The Rebels enter the final round a mere two strokes out of a top-10 finish, a familiar spot for them as they carded nine such finishes in 10 regular-season tournaments a year ago.

Action from the Ptarmigan Country Club will wrap up Tuesday with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
