FORT COLLINS, COLO. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team wrapped up action in their season-opening tournament, climbing five spots up the leader board on the final day to finish eighth at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.
UC Davis took the team title, finishing two strokes ahead of Illinois and defending champion Colorado . Texas Tech carded the lowest team total on the day, finishing at even par to grab fourth, followed by Cal in fifth, Baylor in sixth and Colorado State in seventh.
"This was a good opening tournament for us," said head coach Amy Bush. "Behind an amazing round from Katerina, we were able to finish strong and move up the leader board. I am extremely excited for what the future holds with this team and look forward to our next tournament at the end of the month."
Despite turning in her only round over par, UC Davis' Demi Runas was able to hold off Hayley Davis for medalist honors, finishing 5-under for the tournament.
Sophomore Katerina Prorokova led the Rebels on the day, carding one of only seven rounds under par and the lowest of the day with a 3-under 69. The Czech Republic native got off to a hot start, carding birdies on two of the first four holes and made just one bogey on the day.
Prorokova's final round bested her previous career-low of 72 at last season's UNLV Spring Invitational and helped her jump from 53rd to a tie for 17th, marking her first top-20 finish at UNLV.
Senior Bethany Calvo capped the two-day tournament with a 5-over round of 77, finishing tied for 38th overall. Joining Calvo in a tie for 38th was freshman Mayko Chwen Wang. Wang finished with a +3, 75 in the final round, moving up seven spots along the way.
Marguerite Swearingen's final round of 77 put her in a tie for 54th while Dana Finkelstein finished tied for 76th after a final round of 81 to round out the Rebel lineup.
