LAS VEGAS - Sophomore standout Lucia Batta, ranked 121st, upset one of the nation's top players to highlight the host team's first day at the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Batta, last season's Mountain West Freshman of the Year, opened with 6-1, 7-5 victory over Patricia Skowronski of Oregon to advance. In the second round, she rallied past third-seeded and 16th-ranked Lauren McHale of North Carolina, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach Saturday's quarterfinals, where she will meet 19th-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC.

UNLV's other entry in the top flight, 87th-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska, won her first match, 6-3, 6-2 over Sianna Simmons of Arizona State, before falling in the second round to 38th-ranked Hanna Mar of Duke, 6-1, 6-0.

UNLV still has three doubles team alive as Batta and Josifoska teamed up to win their opening Flight One match, 9-7, over Stanford's Stacey Tan and Natalie Dillon. In Flight Two, De Lanlay and Anett Ferenczi-Bako downed Julia Metzger and Pascal Neubert of Oregon, 8-6, while Ella Bourchier and Rumyana Terzieva received a bye.

Players from nine of the top college programs in the United States have gathered on campus for what is one of the game's top individual tournaments each season. Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
