No. 2 Rebels In Sixth After First Day In Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 2 UNLV men's golf team is in sixth place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational after shooting rounds of 1-over-par 285 in both the first and second rounds on Friday. The 17-team, 95-individual tournament is being played at Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,026 yards).

San Diego State leads the field by four shots at 11-under 557 after a first-round 2-under 282 and a second-round 9-under 275. California is in second place at 7-under, followed by New Mexico at 3-under. Arizona State and Washington are both tied for fourth at even par, while UNLV is 2-over for the tournament.

San Diego State's Alex Kang and Arizona State's Austin Quick are both tied for the individual lead after 36 holes at 9-under 133. Kang shot 68-65, while Quick carded 66-67. The Rebels were led by senior Derek Ernst, who is in third place, three shots back at 6-under 136. Ernst shot 2-under 69 in the first round and 4-under 67 in the second round. He had eight birdies on the day with just two bogeys.

Other Rebel individuals: freshman Carl Jonson is 24th at 1-over 143 after a 72 and 71, sophomore Blake Biddle is tied for 28th at 3-over 145 after a 71 and 74, junior Kevin Penner is tied for 34th at 5-over 147 after a 74 and 73, and freshman Kurt Kitayamais tied for 64th at 10-over 152 after a 73 and 79.
