LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV had a total of 83 student-athletes earn Spring 2012 Academic All-Mountain West Team honors, the league office announced today. The women's swimming & diving team led its respective sport with a program-best 23 student-athletes being recognized, while the baseball (10), women's tennis (seven) and men's tennis (six) programs finished second overall in the conference.
UNLV posted its fifth consecutive year of having at least 126 student-athletes achieve academic recognition with 36 individuals honored in the fall of 2010 in addition to the 90 (seven of which were for men's swimming & diving in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) this spring.
The women's tennis and track & field programs tied their previous bests with seven (every member of the team) and 17 student-athletes tabbed to the academic team.
The women's basketball team had five compared to four each in women's golf and softball. The men's golf program rounded out UNLV's representatives with two honorees.
Overall, 594 student-athletes from the MW were named to the academic team. Springs sports include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track & field.
To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MW Team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic team at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their team.
