LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Four players from host UNLV advanced in singles Thursday during the second day of the 2013 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
Top-seeded and 32nd-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska dispatched BYU's Demi Daniels, 6-0, 6-2, while second-seeded and 41st-ranked Lucia Batta downed Colorado's Alex Aiello, 6-1, 7-5. Joining them in Friday's third round will be Santa Shumilina, who won her match over Boise State's Anissa Bryant-Swift, 7-6, 6-0; and Iren Kotseva, who eased past Denver's Michelle Garpenlov, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, UNLV also has two duos still alive: Batta and Josifoska, seeded fourth, blanked Kristi Elmer and Ashley Tanner of Weber State, 8-0; and Paola Artiga and Shumilina got by Boise State's Bryant-Swift and Sammie Watson 8-3.
Friday's schedule will consist of one round of doubles and two more rounds of singles. The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
Members from 19 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
