LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 2-under -par 286 on Sunday and is in fifth place after one round of play at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, which is being played at Isleworth Golf and Country Club (par 72, 7,387 yards).
The Rebels trail team-leader Alabama by six shots as the Crimson Tide hold a two-shot lead at 8-under over second-place UCF. California and Illinois are both tied for third at 4-under, while Arkansas and Vanderbilt both follow the Rebels in a tie for sixth at 1-under. 15 teams are competing.
Individually, Alabama's Trey Mullinax and Joel Stalter are tied for the lead after 6-under 66s. Illinois Brian Campbell is one back at 5-under, while UNLV junior Kurt Kityama is part of a three-way tie for fourth place at 4-under 68.
Kitayama's round consisted of six birdies and two bogeys. He started out the day with four straight birdies (holes 10-13) before bogeying No. 4 and 5. He closed out his round with a birdie at No. 6 and again at No. 8.
UNLV sophomore Zane Thomasis also in the top 10 after the first day of play as he is 2-under 70, which is tied for 10th. Thomas had five birdies and three bogeys during his round.
Other Rebels: sophomore AJ McInerney is tied for 32nd at 1-over, junior Carl Jonson is tied for 48th at 3-over, and freshman Taylor Montgomeryis tied for 60th at 5-over.There are a total of 75 individuals competing.
