Jan. 10, 2014

LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's golfer Dana Finkelstein has been selected to represent the United States at the 2014 World University Golf Championship to be held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland in June. The event will be played at the world-famous 18-hole, par-72 Severiano Ballesteros course, which is home to the Omega European Masters, and is sponsored by the International University Sports Federation.

In 2012 the biennial golf competition featured golfers from Spain, Germany, Sweden, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Great Britain, France, Czech Republic, Canada, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Italy, Malaysia and China, as well as the United States. Participants will be in Switzerland for one week from June 21-28 and will take part in individual and team competitions. Each country can take five female players: three play as the team, counting the best two scores each day over a total of 72 holes for the tournament, while the other two play for medalist honors as individuals.

"I'm really excited to be one of the five players to wear the red, white and blue," Finkelstein said. "It will definitely be an experience. This will be my first time leaving the country and I'm very excited to compete against some of the top collegiate golfers in the world. I look forward to representing my country and UNLV well in June."

Joining the Chandler, Ariz. native to represent the United States will be former high school teammate Kyung Kim of USC, Jenny Han of Vanderbilt, Liz Nagel of Michigan State and one player to be named later.

Finkelstein will become the first Rebel to participate in the World University Golf Championship which dates back to 1986.

"This is absolutely huge for our program and for Dana," UNLV head coach Amy Bush-Herzer said. "We are really excited about this opportunity for her. She has had a spectacular career so far and this will only add to her list of accomplishments."

The 2012-13 Mountain West Golfer of the Year averages a score of 74.28 and captured her first collegiate win at the Ram Classic. This season she ranks No. 24 in the country with an average score of 71.64 strokes per round according to GolfStat.

The UNLV women's golf team opens the spring portion of its 2013-14 schedule on February 15 at the Peg Barnhard Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
