Box Score
UNLV played one of its best defensive halves of the season on Sunday, but couldn't keep up with league-leading San Diego State in the second half, falling 3-0 to the Aztecs in Mountain West women's soccer action Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels (7-6-1, 2-4 MW) opened the game taking the action right to the Aztecs (11-2-1, 6-0-0 MW). That allowed UNLV to both take a few strong scoring chances at the SDSU goal, while keeping the Aztecs off their game offensively. The half would end in a scoreless tie, and the Aztecs were held to just three total shots by UNLV. The Rebels attempted four over the first 45 minutes, including a pair of shots on goal, both stopped by SDSU goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn.
UNLV was unable to hold the Aztecs off in the second half. The shutout was first snapped in the 56th minute on a close range goal by Hannah Keane, off an assist by Haley Locker. The lead grew to 2-0 in the 60th minute when Keane sent in a cross from the right side that was one-timed into the goal by Aliyah Utush.
SDSU's final score came in the 79th minute on an Angela Mitchell score. The Aztec drove down the right side, outraced a couple of Rebel defenders to the right before unleashing a shot back across the goal to the left post for the score. The second half shot advantage would finish at 11-3 for SDSU, and 14-7 for the afternoon. Two Rebels took two shots each in the game, Kaila Brinkman and Kristin Sankey.
Jordan Sallee finished with two saves in the game for UNLV, while Dakota Blazak headed out a shot for a team save as well. Vaughn posted three saves to earn the shutout for SDSU. The Aztecs also held a 6-2 edge on corner kicks for the game.
UNLV will be back on the road for its next three games, starting with a Friday, Oct. 17 contest at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., with a 2 pm (PT) start.
