LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV picked up a key victory on Friday afternoon, a 1-0 win on the road at Utah State in Mountain West women's soccer action at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field. The win, the second shutout in a row for the Rebels on the road, moved their record to 4-5 in league play (9-7-1 overall), keeping them within a point of the final berth in next month's conference tournament. Utah State meanwhile dropped to 9-6-2, 4-3-1 in the MW.
"Today was a must win for us in a really tough environment," said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. "Utah State is a very good team, extremely hardworking and made things difficult for us in the first half. In the second half we settled down and created a lot more chances."
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Sallee turned in a great job in the goal for the Rebels to earn her fifth complete shutout of the season. She faced a total of 16 shots, and stopped all six shots on goal by the Aggies.
UNLV was outshot by a 13-6 margin for the game and had only two shots on goal, both from junior Denali Murnan. Her strike in the 57th minute would result in the game-winner, as she flicked in a ball off a play that started with a free kick from Kristin Sankey. Jordan Magnin also assisted on the score, Murnan's fourth of the year.
"Denali scored a fantastic goal and the defense did a great job of keeping the shutout for us today," said Shaw.
Utah State finished with the edge on shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks as well (6-5). Jeannie Woller posted one save in goal for the Aggies.
UNLV returns home for a Senior Day contest on Sunday at 1 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels' lone senior, Sankey, will be honored before the game as well undergraduate coach Erica Meier. There will also be a special fan promotion for the game with the first 250 fans receiving a free Rebel soccer seat cushion.
