LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Host UNLV saw one of its top two singles players advance during Friday's opening day of the Larry Easley Memorial Classic, which is being played this weekend at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Ace Matias, ranked No. 123 in the nation, first downed Duong Nguyen of Mesa Community College 6-0, 6-0, and then swept Kester Black of NAU, 6-0, 6-3, to move into Saturday's semifinals.
Matias and doubles partner Denys Pume earned a first round bye Friday and will play their first match together tomorrow.
Action resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with the first of two rounds of doubles. Admission is free of charge.
Players from seven other programs are competing in the individual event along with the Rebels: Arizona, Boise State, Oregon, NAU, Grand Canyon, Seminole (Okla.) State College and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.
The annual tournament was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
