UNLV WOMEN'S SOCCER

Box Score

After dropping a tough loss on Friday night in which the only score was on an own goal, UNLV responded strongly on Sunday morning with a 3-0 shutout of San Jose State in Mountain West women's soccer action at Peter Johann Field. The Rebels evened their league mark at 2-2, and moved to 7-4-2 for the season with the victory.

"Today was a great result against a tough San Jose State team," said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. "We have struggled to score goals the last few goals, so to score three goals against a team that had been allowing less than one goal a game is a great accomplishment."

All three goals for the Rebels came in a six-minute span over the end of the first half and the start of the second. Junior midfielder Denali Murnan, the team's leading scorer, notched her third goal of the season in the 44th minute when she headed in a cross from the right side. Gaby Vazquez and Kristen Sankey assisted on the score that put the Rebs up 1-0.

UNLV scored again right out of the halftime break. The Rebels earned a corner kick that was sent by Vazquez into the box near the middle of the goal. Dakota Blazak then quickly kicked a hard shot that deflected off a SJSU player before hitting the back of the net for the score just 39 seconds into the second half. That made the advantage 2-0 in the 46th minute, while Vazquez was credited with an assist on the score.

Just over four minutes later came another Rebel goal . This was provided by Isabelle Delgado, as she received a pass from Michaela Kelsey and drove down the left side before unleashing a shot from the top left corner of the box cross cage to the back right post. That goal, coming in the 49th minute, accounted for the final 3-0 tally.

UNLV held a 13-8 overall edge on shots, and 8-2 on shots on goal. Corner kicks were also in UNLV's favor by a 10-4 margin. Jordan Sallee made two saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season, while it was the sixth overall for the team. Zoe Markrigiannis finished with five saves in the net for the Spartans.

The Rebels return to action on Friday, Oct. 10, when they host New Mexico at 7 pm at Johann Field.
