LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior standout
Ace Matias will play for both the singles and doubles crowns Sunday after advancing through day two of the Larry Easley Memorial Classic, which is being played this weekend at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Matias, ranked No. 123 in the nation, on Saturday rallied past Oregon's Jayson Amos 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the singles semifinals. Matias and doubles partner Denys Pume also won twice to stay alive. The duo first got by Adi Zilberstein and Tomas Hons of NAU 8-2 and then blanked Trevor James and Romain Boudaroua of Arizona 8-0.
Action resumes at 10 a.m. Sunday with the doubles final, followed by singles.
Players from seven other programs are competing in the individual event along with the Rebels: Arizona, Boise State, Oregon, NAU, Grand Canyon, Seminole (Okla.) State College and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.
The annual tournament was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
