LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV fell short in both the singles and doubles finals of the Larry Easley Memorial Classic, which wrapped up Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex and completed the fall individual tournament season for the men's program.
To start the morning, the senior duo of Ace Matias and Denys Pume were downed in the doubles championship, 8-6, by the Boise State team of Abe Hewko and Lewis Roskilly.
Matias, ranked No. 123 in the nation, then played a three-set singles final that saw Oregon's Daniel Sardu prevail 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
"Overall, we had a good tournament this weekend," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "We saw a lot of good tennis and a lot of positives for the Rebels."
Players from seven other programs competed in the individual event along with the Rebels: Arizona, Boise State, Oregon, NAU, Grand Canyon, Seminole (Okla.) State College and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College. The annual tournament was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
