Nov. 22, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After suffering its first loss of the season on Friday night to Stanford (89-60) in the semifinals of 2014 Northwestern Mutual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., the UNLV men's basketball team will face Temple in the tournament's consolation game on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST.
The Runnin' Rebels won both preliminary round games at home to start their season: vs. Morehead State, 60-59, on Nov. 14, and vs. Sam Houston State, 59-57, on Sunday.
The Runnin' Rebels, who had to replace all five starters from a year ago, have played six freshmen, two sophomores and two seniors so far this season. Freshman guard Rashad Vaughn scored 26 points in the season opener, then 18 on Sunday. He leads the team with an average of 17.0 ppg. Sophomore forward Christian Wood recorded his first career double-double with career highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds, also blocking four shots in the season opener, then had another Friday night vs. Stanford (12 points, 11 rebounds). He leads the team in rebounding with 9.7 rpg and is second in scoring at 10.3 ppg. Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh blocked seven shots against Morehead State, then followed that up with six against SHSU, while senior guard Cody Doolin has dished out seven assists in each of UNLV's first two games this season and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 6.0. The Runnin' Rebels trailed by as many as 11 in the second half in both of their wins this season, getting a defensive stop on the final play of both games to secure the victories.
