Nov. 23, 2014 Box Score
HONOLULU, Hawai'i (UNLVRebels.com) -
A poor shooting night from the floor was too much for UNLV to overcome, as it dropped a 79-70 women's basketball contest at Hawai'i on Sunday night at the Stan Sherrif Center, in the final game of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Lady Rebels, who shot 37.7% for the game, dropped to 2-2 on the year, while Hawai'i improved to 3-1.
The home team never trailed in the game, opening up a 22-9 edge seven minutes into the game. UNLV then responded, as freshman Nikki Wheatley came off the bench to spark an 11-0 spurt to cut the edge to two points. That would be the pattern for the rest of the way, as UH opened up several double-digit leads, and UNLV would counter with runs to close within a single possession. The Lady Rebels could never get a tying score however, and eventually the Rainbow Wahine pulled away for the victory.
Leading UNLV was senior guard Danielle Miller, the leading scorer in the Mountain West, as she has now scored 20 or more points in all four games this year. Against UH Miller finished with 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Alana Cesarz added 16 points, but was held to just two second half points. Wheatley was next with nine points.
Hawaii finished with advantages not only in shooting (48.3%), but also held edges in points off turnovers (20-9) and second chance points (21-12). The rebounding battle was won as well by UH, 46-44. Leading the team in scoring was Connie Morris with 21 points.
UNLV returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 29, when it hosts Delaware State in the first game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up, starting at 12 pm in the Cox Pavilion.
