Lady Rebels Top Delaware State 91-78

Nov. 29, 2014

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -

UNLV's size in the post and ability to get to the line was the difference in a 91-78 victory over Delaware State in the first game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up on Saturday afternoon at the Cox Pavilion. With their second 91-point game of the season, the Lady Rebels improved to 3-2 overall (3-0 in Las Vegas) and advanced to Sunday's championship game. They will face South Dakota State, who were 55-42 winners over Northern Illinois in the day's second game, at 2:30 pm inside the Cox Pavilion. NIU and Delaware State will play in the consolation game at 12 pm.

Alana Cesarz led UNLV with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Danielle Miller became the first Lady Rebel since Sequoia Holmes in 2007-08 to post five straight 20+ point scoring games, after scoring 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting with a perfect 9-of-9 performance at the line. Aley Rohde also finished in double-figures with 15 points.

"We started off with a great tempo offensively tonight," said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. "Defensively I thought we could have played better, but I was happy with how we moved the ball on offense tonight that led to some good open looks. Dani has been playing very confident this season and continues to spark our offense, while Aley really finished well tonight with a strong physical performance."

UNLV shot 55% for the game (33-of-60) and made 6-of-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc. The Lady Rebels also connected on 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the line. UNLV won the rebounding battle 35-23, and forced 18 turnovers with nine steals. UNLV also dished out a season-high 25 assists.

Nikki Wheatley and Diamond Major, who were both making their first career starts, sparked the Lady Rebels as they scored the team's first nine points of the game, opening up a 9-4 edge. The lead was again at five, 18-13, on a Rohde layup at the 13:19 mark of the first half.

Delaware State made a charge, scoring six straight points and using a 10-1 run to grab a 23-19 edge with 10:34 left. Tierra Hawkins scored six of the Hornets' points during that spurt. UNLV took back the lead on a 6-0 run of its own with Miller putting the Lady Rebs ahead 25-23 on a layup with under nine minutes left. Bri Justice converted a layup to tie the game, but then Cesarz drained the first of her three treys on the night that would put UNLV ahead for good. The half saw the Lady Rebels end on a 10-2 run that opened up a 45-33 advantage at the break.

The second half saw the Hornets make several small runs at UNLV as they twice cut the edge to four points, at 51-47 and again at 58-54 at the 11:47 mark. That was the closest DSU would come, and the Lady Rebs slowly increased the edge back to double-digits. With just under two minutes to play the Hornets connected on two-of-two at the line to make the score 82-73. UNLV closed out the game by with a 9-2 run, before DSU hit a trey to account for the final 13-point margin.

The Hornets hit 55.6% of their shots (35-of-63), but were outscored by 12 from three-point land (2-6 total), and 13 at the line (6-of-9). Hawkins paced DSU with 23 points, while Amber Bogard posted 15, Raine Bankston added 11 and Raven Bankston 10.
