Dec. 2, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV offensive lineman Brett Boyko and wide receiver Devonte Boyd earned spots on the All-Mountain West second team and Boyd, who leads the nation in receiving yards by a freshman, was named the league's Freshman of the Year as part of the conference's official postseason awards announced Tuesday. In addition, three other Rebels earned honorable mention.
Boyd, a graduate of Henderson's Basic High School, became UNLV's third Freshman of the Year in the MW and fifth overall. Ryan Wolfe, who went on to become the school's all-time leading receiver, was the last Rebel to earn the title back in 2006.
Boyd led the Rebels in receptions with 64 and receiving yards with 973 and tied for the squad lead with four receiving touchdowns. He broke Wolfe's single-season school records for a freshman in both catches and yards and tied him and Carlos Baker (1995) for most 100-yard games by a freshman with three. The 973 yards were the second-most by a freshman in MW history and the 64 receptions ranked third by a conference frosh. Boyd's career-high 11 grabs vs. New Mexico were also a UNLV freshman record.
Boyko (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/St. Joseph HS), a senior who also won second team in 2013, split time starting all 13 games at left tackle and left guard for the Rebels this fall and allowed just one quarterback sack while leading the squad with 37 pancake blocks. He is the first UNLV offensive lineman to earn first team or second team all-league honors more than once in a career since Pat Harden and Bill Operin both were members of the Big West Conference's second team in 1987 and '88. Boyko, who has accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Game next month, also earned All-MW honorable mention after his Freshman All-America season in 2011.
Earning honorable mention for the fourth straight season, center Robert Waterman (Castaic, Calif./West Ranch HS) was a member of the Rimington Award Watch List for the third straight fall and graded out highest among UNLV linemen for the season at 93 percent.
Joining him as a repeat honoree was junior safety Peni Vea (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i/Kealakehe HS), who ranked second on the team with 88 tackles, including 7.5 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 quarterback sacks, while grabbing one interception and a forcing a fumble.
The final Rebel to earn honorable mention in 2014 was standout wide receiver Devante Davis (Galena Park, Texas/North Shore HS), who missed half of his senior season with an injury. Despite the missed time, he ranked second on the team with 34 catches for 599 yards to go with four touchdowns. He posted four of his 11 career 100-yard efforts in the seven games in which he appeared this fall. His 17.6 yards-per-reception average was a career-high and against Hawai'i, Davis posted the longest catch - 81 yards - by a Rebel since 1997. He recently became just the fifth UNLV player in history to be invited to play in the Senior Bowl next month.
