LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (6-3) swept the doubleheader against Air Force (3-5) on Saturday, beating the Falcons 6-1 in the first game and 13-3 in the second. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT.
In the first game, the Rebels got on the board in the third inning when Matt McCallister hit a double down the right field scoring Joey Swanner from second.
UNLV extended its lead in the fourth inning when the Rebels scored five runs on five hits. McCallister drove in two of the runs when he hit a double down the left field line, scoring Swanner and Morgan Stotts.
The Falcons would avoid being shut out when they scored one run in the eighth inning.
Starting pitcher, Erick Fedde (2-1), allowed one run on four hits while walking three and striking out seven in 7.2 innings of work. Joey Lauria came in for relief and allowed one hit while striking out three in 1.1 innings of work.
McCallister finished the first game 2-for-3 with three RBI. Patrick Armstrong also had multiple hits in the game and finished 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Air Force jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second game by scoring a run in the first inning. The Rebels countered when Joey Armstrong tripled to lead off the bottom half of the frame and scored when T.J. White grounded out to second base.
The Rebels took the lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning and added runs in every frame except for the bottom of the third inning en route to a 13-3 win.
John Richy (2-0) earned the win after allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and struck out six in 6.0 innings of work. Kenny Oakley (1) earned his first save of the season after allowing two hits and striking out two in 3.0 innings of work.
Joey Armstrong finished a home run shy of the cycle and was 4-of-5 with three RBI and scored a run. Edgar Montes also hit well in the second game, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Erik VanMeetren hit his first home run in two years in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored three runs in the game. Patrick Armstrong also had multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
On the day, both Armstrong brothers recorded four hits to lead the Rebels. Joey Armstrong finished 4-for-8 (.500) and Pat Armstrong was 4-for-9 (.444). McCallister recorded four RBI and two doubles and VanMeetren and Swanner each scored four runs in the Rebels' effort.
UNLV will go for the sweep over Air Force on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The first 250 fans will get a collectable UNLV baseball mini bat.
