SAN JOSÉ, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (13-5, 7-2 Mountain West) could not overcome a strong pitching performance and fell 3-2 to San José State (6-15, 3-6 MW) in the series finale on Sunday.
The Spartans' Kalei Contrades made his first career start and allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven in 7.2 innings of work.
UNLV's Bryan Bonnell recorded his fifth quality start of the season, but did not factor into the decision after allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
SJSU's Myles Richard (1-0) earned the win after pitching 1.1 innings of relief and not allowing a hit. The Rebels' Brayden Torres (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 1.0 inning of work.
The Spartans got on the board by scoring a run in the first inning. They extended their lead to 2-0 after scoring another run in the fourth inning.
UNLV rallied by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning after A.J. Hernandez doubled to lead off the inning and was driven in when Matt McCallister singled. Justin Jones drove in McCallister after two outs were recorded to tie the game.
The game would not be tied for long as SJSU recaptured the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on to win the game.
As a team the Rebels recorded six hits in the game. Joey Swanner, Jones, T.J. White, Hernandez, McCallister and Johnathan Torres each recorded a hit in the game.
UNLV will stay on the road and travel to face No. 8 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. PT.
