2014 Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters Results
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Under tough, windy conditions, the UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 1-over-par 289 on Friday to take a four-shot lead at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).
The prestigious tournament, which annually features one of the toughest fields in college golf, includes seven of the top-10 ranked teams in the country according to Golfweek. In addition, 11 of the 15 teams competing are ranked in the top 20. All participants this year are ranked in the nation's top 50 and the field features 20 of the top-30 ranked individuals.
Oklahoma State is second after a round of 5-over 293, while Oklahoma is third at 8-over. Stanford is fourth at 9-over, followed by Alabama and UCLA in a tie for fifth at 11-over.
Individually, UNLV junior Carl Jonson and Oklahoma State's Wyndham Clark are tied for the lead at 2-under 70. Both Jonson and Clark each recorded four birdies and two bogeys on the day. There is a three-way tie for third at 1-under that includes UNLV freshman Taylor Montgomery. Only five of the 81 individuals competing broke par during the first round.
"I was really proud of our team today," UNLV head coach Dwaine Knight said. "I thought we showed a lot of toughness and patience out there on the course. It was a difficult day to play. The wind blew pretty hard early on and made it very tough. It is a great start for us but we have two more rounds to play and we are hoping that we can continue to be very competitive. That is our goal."
Other Rebels: junior Kurt Kitayama and sophomore Zane Thomas are both tied for 14th at 2-over and freshman Redford Bobbitt is tied for 79th at 13-over. Playing as individuals, freshman James Feutz is tied for 26th at 4-over, freshman Chris Tuulik is tied for 52nd at 8-over and freshman Kenden Slattery is tied for 66th at 10-over. Sophomore AJ McInernery withdrew because of back issues. He will try to play Saturday.
The tournament will continue on Saturday and conclude Sunday with 18 holes each day starting at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the tournament is available on the internet courtesy of Golfstat through a link at UNLVRebels.com. The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and admission is free.
