Rebels Drop Series Finale To Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) -UNLV baseball (10-4, 5-1 Mountain West) suffered a tough 5-4 loss to New Mexico (9-6-1, 1-2 MW) which lasted 12 innings on Sunday at Lobo Field.

The Rebels took an early lead, as they scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Four consecutive singles and a Lobo error helped UNLV take a 3-0 lead.

UNM scored one run in the bottom half of the frame to cut the Rebels' lead to 3-1. The Lobos also tallied one run in the fifth and eighth innings to tie the game.

The two teams were deadlocked at three through the end of nine and played into extra innings where UNLV worked out of a couple jams. The Rebels recaptured the lead by scoring one in the top of the 12th inning on a New Mexico error. The Lobos rallied in the home half of the 12th inning, scoring two runs, and finished the game with a walk-off fielder's choice.

UNLV starter Bryan Bonnell recorded another quality start, his fourth of the year, as he allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and recorded one strikeout in 7.2 innings of work. He also recorded his first walk of the year, which was intentional, in the eighth inning before Brayden Torres came in for relief.

Torres allowed no runs on one hit in and struck out two while walking three in 2.2 innings of work. Joey Lauria (2-1) took the loss after allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits and struck out two while walking two in 1.0 inning of work.

Joey Armstrong (2-for-6), T.J. White (2-for-6), Patrick Armstrong (2-for-6), Erik VanMeetren (2-for-6) Morgan Stotts (2-for-4) and A.J. Hernandez (2-for-4) all finished with multiple hits in the game for the Rebels. ,

UNLV will return to Las Vegas for one game against West Virginia (7-4) on Tuesday. First pitch between the Rebels and Mountaineers is slated for 6:05 p.m. Fans who are not able to make it to Earl E. Wilson Stadium can listen locally on 920 The Game or can watch the action live at UNLVRebels.com.
