LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball's senior first baseman Patrick Armstrong was named the Mountain West Player of the week, the conference office announced earlier today.
Armstrong led the Rebels to a three-game sweep of Mountain West leader and nationally-ranked New Mexico over the weekend. He was 6-of-12 (.500) in the series and scored four runs, drove in seven RBI and hit two home runs. His slugging percentage for the week was 1.167, while he got on base at a .600 clip.
He opened the weekend by going 1-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in the Rebels 11-2 win on Friday. Armstrong followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored, two home runs, two walks, two stolen bases and three RBI in Saturday's 14-6 series-winning victory. He finished the weekend by going 3-for-4 with one run scored, two RBI and one double in the 14-2 victory on Sunday.
This is Armstrong's first conference honor and the third time this season a player from UNLV has been recognized by the MW. Erick Fedde was named the Pitcher of the Week after his performance against Central Michigan in week one and Bryan Bonnell was named the Co-Pitcher of the week after his performance at Fresno State in week eight. The last time a player from UNLV earned MW Player of the Week honors was Joey Swanner on May 13, 2013.
UNLV (28-15/16-8 Mountain West) will start a seven-game road swing on Tuesday at UC Riverside (18-21). Kenny Oakley (3-3, 2.51 ERA) is slated to get the start for the Rebels, while right-handed pitcher Angel Landazuri (2-2, 4.00 ERA) is expected to go for the Highlanders. UNLV will then continue on the road by traveling to South Carolina this weekend to face James Madison (May 3) and Clemson (May 4-5).
