Keeping Up With Amie

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -

Every week this summer, we will hear from a different Lady Rebel as she catches up UNLVRebels.com readers with an account of how their summer is going, an update on their workouts and their goal for the upcoming season. This fourth installment is provided by junior center Amie Callaway.

Hey Rebel fans!

My summer has been GREAT so far. After I finished all of my finals, I went home to San Diego for three weeks. I spent a good amount of time with my dad and his side of the family. My dad ended up teaching me how to rotate my own tires, which ended up being a really cool experience. I also got to spend time with a lot of close friends. I climbed Cowles Mountain multiple times as you can see in my pictures. I worked out with my old high school coach getting my shot ready for the season, and I kept up with the weight lifting plan (Jason) Kabo gave us.

One of the great highlights of being home was that I executed my own event and raised $500 for the American Cancer Society. I called it BBQ For The Cure and even designed my own logo. Being that I'm a hospitality management major with the hopes of becoming an event planner, I was extremely proud of myself. It had a few kinks but it went great for my first event and I can't wait for next year's!

After my three-week stay in San Diego, I didn't come back alone. Since my mom is from Germany and is a famous knitwear designer, she took another trip back to Germany for a busy schedule full of workshops like she did last year, and since I didn't go I was asked to watch one of my sisters for the month.

I also work in admissions, so the entire time I've been back; I've been working the New Student Orientations for the incoming freshman. It's been so much fun! All of my coworkers have their own unique personalities and I'm so blessed to know and work with them. The end of June also means camp season, so I joined the rest of my fellow teammates and coaching staff and worked Lady Rebel Day Camp, Elite Camp and Team Camp. I got a taste of what it's like to coach and now I understand why our staff is always so stressed! Another cool thing I got to participate in with them was the Chillin' 4 Charity, Cold Water Challenge that benefitted the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. I mean who doesn't want to dumb ice water on their coach and teammate?

The best thing about summer time is my birthday and the 4th of July. For my birthday I got to go to Laughlin, NV with my dad, his girlfriend and two of my best friends. We went swimming, jet skiing and cliff jumping into the amazing Colorado River. As you can see I only jumped off a baby cliff, but don't judge me. For the 4th of July, I had a little get together at my house with a few coworkers and had a lot of fun.

On July 8th, I drove down to California to attend my dad's surprise birthday party that his girlfriend Rebecca had planned, a bunch of his friends came as well as two of my brothers, Reginald Jr. and Harvey (pictured). My dad was COMPLETELY surprised and had no clue the party was happening so it was a really fun experience. I have never been apart of a surprise party so being that it was my first one and it was a success was pretty cool.

To wrap this blog up, Ceannia Kincade, my new roommate and a Lady Rebel Volleyball player, finally moved in! We also added another member to our household, a mud turtle named Stu. Can't wait to see what the year has in store for us!
