LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
UNLV dominated the game from the start to finish with a 28-5 edge on shots, and found the back of the net three times in the second half to claim a 3-0 shutout victory over Saint Francis in women's college soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Johann Memorial Field in the UNLV Nike Invitational. The win improved the Rebels to 3-1 on the season, while the Red Flash dropped to 0-4.
"I was very happy overall with our performance today," said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. "We did a good job of limiting their chances, while we have a very dynamic offensive team. We knew we would get more chances today then we did on Friday against Colorado, and that all we would have to do is take advantage of those and finish them, and we were able to do that today."
The Rebels kept the ball on the SFU side of the field almost the entire first half, but could not break through into the scoring column despite taking 14 total shots. The second half also saw the Rebels take 14 shots, but this time they were able to finish off a few chances, beginning in the 52nd minute. The day's first goal came when Dakota Blazak served up a pass into the box that was headed towards the goal by Denali Murnan. The shot was saved, but it bounced out to Jodi Barber, who placed the ball back into the goal for the score and a 1-0 UNLV edge.
The lead grew to 2-0 in the 65th minute on a counter-attack that saw Sophie Cortes bring the ball down the left side. She fed a pass into the middle that Red Flash goalkeeper Romina Kunze lunged at but could only slightly deflect the ball. Blazak was there to quickly score on the open net.
UNLV missed a chance for a 3-0 lead after a penalty kick attempt hit the post, but were rewarded for their strong offensive play with another penalty kick, this time in the 81st minute. Jordan Magnin took the PK, and scored for her first of the year and a 3-0 Rebel advantage.
The Rebels' edge on shots on goal for the game was 14-2, and 5-0 on corner kicks. Jordan Sallee and Jessie Clark teamed up for the shutout, with Sallee posting two saves in 84 minutes of action. Kunze finished with 11 saves for the Red Flash.
UNLV is now off 11 days before starting a six-game, month long road swing. The road trip begins on Friday, Sept. 12 at Utah with a 6:30 pm (PT) start in Salt Lake City.
