OREM, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - Playing in its second straight overtime contest on the road, the UNLV women's soccer team came up just short, falling on a golden goal by Utah Valley in the 99th minute in a 1-0 setback on Sunday afternoon at Clyde Field. The Rebels dropped to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Wolverines improved to 5-2-1 overall.
"It was a tough result today," said UNLV head coach
Chris Shaw. "Sunday games are always tough on the road and today was no different. I think after going into overtime against a quality opponent on Friday (Utah), we just had heavy legs today, while dealing with a few players that had lingering injuries as well."
The shot totals were fairly even in the first half, with the Wolverines taking four to three for the Rebels and each goalie made one save. The second half saw the Rebels become more aggressive, taking a total of 10 shots and forcing Utah Valley goalkeeper Jessica Duffin to make four stops to keep the game scoreless. The Wolverines took four shots of their own in that second stanza, one of which was saved by UNLV's
Jordan Sallee.
The game went into overtime, the third of the year for UNLV and the second of the weekend after a 1-1 tie at Utah on Friday night. It was the Wolverines that came out attacking in the extra time, taking all three shots of the period. The winning score came following a throw-in to Kali Stubbs, who passed the ball over to Tori Smith. She then redirected the ball into the goal for the score with just 1:32 left in the overtime. Sydney Fitzpatrick was also credited with an assist on the goal.
UNLV finished with a 13-11 edge on shots, 5-3 on shots on goal. Sallee made two saves on the night, to five for Duffin. Corner kicks were 3-0 in favor of the Rebels.
The Rebels will play on the road again next weekend, beginning with a Friday, Sept. 19 contest at UTEP in El Paso, Texas with a 4 pm (PT) start. That will be followed by a Sunday, Sept. 21 game in Las Cruces, N.M., against the New Mexico State Aggies at 11 am (PT).
