UNLV used a second half penalty kick to claim its third straight victory, 1-0 at Colorado State in the Mountain West women's soccer season opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at The Lagoon on the CSU campus. The win, also the third straight on the road for the Rebels, improved their record to 6-2-1 overall.
"Every conference game is important and it is great to start conference play off with a win," said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. "We had a tough first half but I felt like we settled down in the second half. We defended better as a team while creating more chances."
The teams combined for just six shots total in the first half (UNLV 4, Colorado State 2), and the two goalies were only called upon to make three saves in the first 45 minutes. Both teams stepped up their attack in the second half, with the Rebels taking seven in the second half. The winning score followed a foul in the box when a Rebel player was knocked down during a scramble for the ball. That led to a penalty kick, which sophomore Jordan Magnin converted for the eventual game-winner in the 58th minute.
UNLV finished the game with a 11-7 edge on shots, and 5-2 in shots on goal. The Rebels also took six corner kicks to just one for the Rams. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Sallee collected two saves for her third shutout of the season, while Jesse McGinley finished with four stops for CSU (2-7).
The Rebels return to action on Sunday with a 12 pm (PT) contest in Laramie, Wyo., against the Wyoming Cowgirls.
