Denys Pume won another three-setter Tuesday to move into tomorrow's third round of singles qualifying at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's Tennis All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Pume, who led the Rebels in wins last year with a record of 27-10, downed Notre Dame's Josh Hagar 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. He will now face Francisco Dias of George Washington, who won a marathon three-set match himself on Tuesday to advance.
"Denys battled today," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "He hung in there to beat a very solid player in three tough sets."
UNLV's other representative at the tourney, senior Ace Matias, lost his first round consolation match to Virginia's Mac Styslinger, 6-3, 6-3, to end his singles efforts.
Later in the day in doubles play, Pume and Matias joined forces to win their first round qualifying match, downing North Florida's Lasse Muscheites and Yannick Zuern, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
However, in the next round, the Rebel duo lost to Oklahoma's Axel Alvarez and Dane Webb, seeded 9-16, by the score of 6-4, 6-2.
Qualifying concludes Wednesday with the main draw scheduled for Thursday through Sunday.
